But it’s actually much more than that; it’s a fundamental shift in the way we think about communication, engagement, and purpose in the workplace.
Here are three things you can do in a leadership role to embrace and nurture the future of work:
Communicate, communicate, communicate! If you want everyone on your team to succeed and feel valued, you need to communicate 3x as much.
The future of work concept here is simple: Having clear and consistent agendas, meeting notes, and project plans keeps everyone rowing in the same direction.
Try introducing a weekly summary of accomplishments, issues, and priorities to guide weekly 1:1 meetings.
Regularly talk about professional goals/development.
Prioritize employee growth and fulfillment.
Schedule a quarterly 1:1 meeting with your direct reports to discuss growth using these three items: a) Do you understand how your goals are aligned with our broader initiatives? b) What would make your work more engaging? c) What professional development goals have you set for yourself, and how can I help?
Don’t forget to stay human amid all the tech.
Small talk over Zoom can feel tedious and disingenuous.
But if you’ve fostered real connections within your team, chit chatting to celebrate a recent milestone or a big success (or yes, weekend plans) can really boost morale.
In short, the future of work is more than just flexibility.
Above all else, it’s about remembering that human-centric leadership is what accelerates performance and desired outcomes.—Karen Hebert-Maccaro, Morning Brew’s Queen of the Eduverse
