INDONESIAKININEWS.COM - You have likely heard that different people have different cognitive skills. Intelligence is not simply a matter of earning high grades in school, being able to calculate the tip on a bill without turning to a calculator, or knowing the history of Rome like the back of your hand. Intelligence takes many different forms, and some of them can help you be much more successful.

Being successful does not necessarily mean being the CEO of your own company or having a bank account balance that is many digits long. It also refers to reaching the goals you have set for yourself, in terms of personal and professional growth. It can consist in reaching the point where you are satisfied with the life you are living, and to get there, you will have to make some smart decisions and take other steps.

You won’t find success if you avoid making tough calls (or, even worse, any decisions at all). If you don’t have the ability to commit to future goals and start taking the first small steps to achieve them, you won’t make progress. Working on different types of intelligence is key to starting down your path to success.

Doctor and author Lissa Rankin wrote on the mindbodygreen website that there are four types of intelligence that can determine whether someone will be successful.

The 4 types of intelligence, and how to develop them

1. Mental Intelligence

This refers to critical thinking and those who excel in it are always seeking to be better informed (with real and trustworthy facts), are curious, and question everything they see and read in their search for the truth.

You can expand your mental intelligence through formal education, reading, taking classes, and listening to experts talk about their areas of authority. Always search for opportunities to be better informed. There is always room to grow and learn new things.

2. Intuitive Intelligence

The Human Company consulting agency describes this type of intelligence as a combination of reason and instinct. It allows you to make good decisions and choices even in situations when you don’t have all the facts, cannot know every possible outcome, and can’t forecast what exactly will unfold in response to your choices. It allows you to understand things even when they aren’t, or can’t be, explained explicitly.

You need to learn to listen and observe, pay attention to details, and learn to trust your inner voice. The goal is to follow your intuitions while also not being distracted by noise, especially those who would discourage you from pursuing your goal (much as Jeff Bezos believed in his idea for Amazon when almost no one else did).

3. Emotional Intelligence

This is probably the most important type of intelligence, as it is both about understanding and controlling your own emotions and also better understanding and relating to others. Being able to truly listen to others is necessary to become a better leader that people will want to follow. Emotional intelligence is also key to keeping cool under pressure.

Tools like meditation, mindfulness exercises and therapy can help you better understand your emotions and how to become a more empathetic person. It is also important to work at truly listening to others and taking the time to understand exactly what they are telling you.

4. Somatic intelligence

This type of intelligence is related to our physical body, and it refers to the ability to understand it and how the events it has experienced—or ones it is living through at the current moment—affect it. Our bodies are smarter than we realize, and they reveal a lot if we learn to listen to them. Somatic intelligence allows us to understand what they are trying to say. One example of this is when our hearts race when we are in a dangerous situation.

Make an effort to be aware of how your body feels—exercises like yoga can help you be more in tune with it. With time you will be better able to understand the source of physical feelings and place more trust in the messages that you receive intuitively or through your gut, so to speak. A key part of this process is keeping an open mind that is attentive to the signals it receives.
